A lot of people ask
me about smoking cessation and weight loss through hypnotherapy
because these problems are two of the most normally
recognized uses of hypnotherapy. The problem is that
most people are not successful in either stopping smoking
or losing weight in the long term. Many people may experience
some short term benefits, but in the long term (one
year), they fail. Why is this so if hypnotherapy is
such a great tool for making positive changes in one's
life? The answer has to do with the sources of the smoking
and weight problems.
Standard
hypnotherapy for smoking cessation and weight loss presumes
that smoking and weight problems are caused by bad habits.
It assumes that the client just got addicted to smoking
because they imbedded the habit into their subconscious
by constantly picking up a cigarette and smoking it
for pleasure. In the case of overweight, the assumption
is that the person just developed the habit of eating
too much and exercising too little.
It is easy
to develop habits by repetition. Actually, habits imbedded
by repetition are how hypnotherapists reprogram the
subconscious mind's computer. But there are good habits
and bad habits. A good habit might be exercising every
day. Bad habits might be smoking and eating too much.
If the
source of the person's problem with smoking or excess
weight is simply a bad habit, then the standard hypnotherapy
technique of putting one into hypnosis and reprogramming
their subconscious with a script that opposes the smoking
or excess weight habit will generally work and the client
will be free of smoking and excess weight. The problem
is that not many smoking and overweight conditions are
caused by simple bad habits. The source of the problem
usually goes much deeper and merely reprogramming the
subconscious if there is a negative forcing function
energy generator in the client's subconscious means
that the therapy will fail. The client may have a smoking
or fat entity attached to him. In a past life, the person
might have been addicted to nicotine or starved to death
in a concentration camp. They may be using excess fat
as protection, etc. There is no way around it. The hypnotherapist
must find the energy source supporting the smoking or
overweight condition and release it or there will be
no permanent change.
In my practice,
clients generally believe their smoking and weight problems
are just bad habits and I tell them that if that's all
that it is, we can rid them of the problem in a single
one and one-half hour session. I try it and it usually
does not work for long term. Usually, I have to go in
after a while and find the sources of the problems…
release them and then reprogram the subconscious and
this then provides permanent change.
